4th 5th Grade "Around the World" Pojects

Today, the 4th and 5th graders presented their "Around the World" Projects. In the 4th and 5th grade, cultural awareness and appreciation are emphasized, as well as cultural diversity being deeply embedded in our national and global history. With that said, 4th and 5th graders researched and presented to the class facts about a chosen country, including how some countries celebrate the holiday season!

Presentations were concluded with many students bringing dishes and desserts specific to their country researched.

We all benefited from the diversity presented to is in both scholarship and cuisine!

Thank you to ALL of the families who joined us!

Guess who got caught being good!

On December 6th, around the world, children wake up to find out if they have been good! Without a doubt, the SMMLC 4th and 5th graders are good and are good friends, as a visitor came to our classroom last night and left fun sheets and yummy treats for us to find first thing this morning!

The 2nd & 3rd graders at SMMLC had visitors today.

The 2nd & 3rd graders at SMMLC had visitors today. Students from UCSB’s Ambassadors for the Environment program used “The Lorax” to teach us about the importance of trees and conservation. Students made a truffula tree and were given milkweed seeds to care for at home. The Ambassadors also left us a potted seed to take care of. They were very impressed by the 2nd and 3rd graders prior knowledge!

4th & 5th Grades Learning About Early California Native Americans

Over the past two weeks, 4th and 5th graders at the FP SMMLC have been learning about Early California Native Americans. You may remember that the 4th and 5th graders previously made shelters using natural resources available to them, much like the early California Native Americans. During our learning, we learned that desert California Indians, like the Mojave, used clay pots.

With that, the 4th and 5th grade students were given clay to mold into a pot. First, we discussed the purpose of a pot--- to hold or carry something. The objective of the pot they were to create included the ability to hold or carry something. Students were quick, but meticulous, to form and shape their pots out of the clay.

After forming their pots and letting them dry, students painted their pots, much like how the desert California Indians would paint their pots.

It continues to impress all of us by the creativity and unique ingenuity each student brings to their learning!
